Quick Posting

So much cool stuff happening, so little time!

  • Portalplayer (PLAY) announced a slick new chipset that adds wireless capabilities.
  • Vonage S-1 now available - they are going public. A quick scan of the financials bears a striking resemblance to the Web 1.0 super-bubble buy.com. Looks like these guys are planning to sell the service at a loss, and make it up on volume. :)
  • Editorial on the lack of true value creation in Web 2.0. This has been bothering me as well, but Mr. Carr just nails it.
  • … and a great article on the Playstation 3 and the future Sony (SNE) faces.

I know I swore off posting simple links, but I just don’t have the time right now to cover these and I wanted to share them today. No one appars to be using the links I’ve placed at the side of the page. Editorial comments on the effectiveness of the links on the side of the page are welcome.

Speaking for myself, I don’t actually generally even see the quick samples, because they are below the fold, hidden under your about, recent posts, and comments sidebar. You’re 3 or 4 posts in before you even encounter the quick samples. Perhaps you can do what Jason Kottke does (http://www.kottke.org) with his remaindered links, and add them into the poststream. Also, for added pleasure, make sure they are integrated into your RSS feeds.

I had this fear when I changed from posting the links daily, in line to the sidebar format. I liked the sidebar format because:

    - New links appeared immediately, and didn’t wait for a 24-hr cycle.
    - Reduced the amount of RSS traffic, particularly for My Yahoo! readers
    - People who didn’t care about the links didn’t have to see them, and those who did would visit the page.

What I really need to do are the following:

    - Upgrade the Wordpress theme to 3-column so that the links could be at the top, in a prominent place. Unless I can find something pre-made and ready to roll I’m not hacking CSS. Perhaps I can turn up a consultant who knows K2.

    - Get a new Host. I use Bluehost and the load times for this site are awful. I’m considering a move to MediaTemple or 1and1. Right now I pay $5 a month, and it’s clear I’m getting what I’m paying for.

Check out this deal for a good webhost and a year’s hosting for 10 bucks:

Dream Host is a well known and respected host. It should work well for a year, at least.

I think adding a column to K2 shouldn’t be hard. I have to play around with WP some anyway, I’ll see how easy it is.

    OK, that wasn’t so hard

This is a temporary blog I set up for the wife, who hasn’t done anything with it yet. Currently, the quick samples stuff is hardcoded, but it should be easy enough to do the del.icio.us integration.

I really like K2. It’s designed exceedingly well. I may have to start using it myself.

Wow, looks like you created a new div class="tertiary" and then modded the sidebar code to be in that class. Is that all you changed?

I can take it from there. You still think my site looks like a pR0n blog?

Yep, that’s pretty much it. I had to do some weird stuff to fix the broken IE box model, and I’m positive there are more bugs that I haven’t seen yet (only checked in 2 browsers - and they are both the most recent). All my changes CSS wise are in the style.css. K2 really is fantastic - they build in the provisions to fix IE in the stylesheet, so everything is right there. Much easier than trying to figure out what the IE hack du jour is at the moment.

I never thought that your site looked like a pr0n blog. I really like this site template. In fact, I may have to take advantage of the Dreamhost deal and fire up a Wordpress blog + customized K2 template. I like my design for broadbandissues.com, and it should be pretty easily ported.
