Verizon uses MoCA to reduce FiOS costs

An article appeared in ZDNet yesterday that provides a clear explanation about the modifications Verizon (VZ) is making to its FiOS FTTH rollout. It’s big news for MoCA and Entropic Communications, a private chip firm that I believe has this key FTTH design win.
I wrote previously that Verizon planned to use of MoCA only as […]

AMCC demonstrates GPON MAC

AMCC (AMCC) demonstrated a GPON chipset in a Xilinx FPGA at OFC in Anaheim. No announcement (that I saw) was made, and no press was in Lightreading.
AMCC previously announced a GPON SERDES and I had heard rumors that they were considering entering the GPON marketplace. Based on what I saw today, the rumors are […]

Vitesse / AMCC Acquisition & Merger Rumors

I received lots of Google hits this morning with search terms “Vitesse Acquisition” and “AMCC Acquisition”. Something in the works? The AMCC/Vitesse merger has to be one of he most recycled rumors out there.

OFC / NFOEC 2006 - Here I come

Back on the road next week to visit some companies on the west coast, and attend OFC Tuesday and Wednesday. Here’s what I’m focusing on during my visit to the biggest optical communications event of the year.

Optical Transport Pricing Trends and Chinese Competition. I think this is just a matter of time, and I’ve written […]

Teknovus and Passave at a Crossroads

Teknovus recently announced a new GE-PON chipset, and it appears they have been able to add features required for NTT’s network. It also appears to be shipping now. From a recent Linley Group newsletter.
These enhancements allow Teknovus to compete with Passave for design wins at NTT, Japan’s largest service provider and the biggest customer of […]

Microsoft Sideshow - iPod killer?

The secondary notebook display is another CES2006 product that failed to get widespread coverage. It’s called Microsoft Sideshow, and was exhibited at Microsoft’s (MSFT) booth under Vista. I learned today that the guts are built with Portalplayer’s (PLAY) ‘Preface‘ chipset. I thought Sideshow was pretty neat when I saw it, and once I learned more […]

NTT GE-PON ONU Hardware BOM

Are you ready for some Japanese ONU install and hardware pr0n? All you Japanese FTTH hardware fanboys get your freak on! This is excerpted from research we did on Passave (PSVE).
All photos and component data (click to enlarge) are courtesy of a Japanese web page. I used Google to translate the page - available here. […]

Bay Microsystems

Lightreading wrote an article about Bay Microsystems, an NPU silicon startup that acquired Parama Networks, a SONET/SDH MSPP on a chip company. While I was at Vitesse I would have competed directly with Parama, yet we never saw them and they never seemed to be a real factor in the market.

Hopefully it […]

AMCC GPON SERDES

It’s rare that I have to use all caps to write a title! The announcement isn’t really all that important other than it shows more and more mainstream communication semiconductor companies are highlighting FTTH as a key market.
AMCC (AMCC) announced today that they have a SERDES for GPON ONU equipment. This isn’t really that spectacular […]

Passave IPO Delay - More Details

Here’s a good article on what happened to Passave’s (PSVE) IPO plans.
Based on this article, other information, as well as personal experience, here’s my take on what probably (READ: SPECULATION) happened. Anyone who has worked for a semiconductor company and developed silicon based on a new standard won’t find anything remarkable in my analysis. You’ve […]

NTT FTTH subscriber additions exceed DSL

There is some eye opening data from FTTH ground zero - Japan. A public NTT (NTT) presentation indicates they are turning on new FTTH (GE-PON to be precise) subscribers at a higher rate than DSL.

NTT is accomplishing this with pricing of 4000 yen a month, or about $40. This is comparable to Verizon (VZ) FiOS […]

iSuppli Xbox360 BOM

iSuppli has a BOM analysis up on the 360, no doubt a result of AnandTech’s hard work. Looks like Microsoft (MSFT) is using the hardware as a loss leader, just as they did on the original Xbox. They estimate the premium Xbox (with hard drive, RF Controllers) has a material cost of $540. The box […]

Xbox Hardware Pr0n

AnandTech has the first Xbox 360 hardware dissection. Everything one needs to get a good idea of what the bill of materials cost is and how the hardware cost relates to the system cost. What kind of gross margins will Microsoft see on launch day and what sort of cost reductions are lurking?
Anandtech also had […]

Motorola and Broadlight

This news caught us by surprise. Motorola has invested in Broadlight, a supplier of silicon for GPON equipment. Our analysis of the GPON market (in conjunction with an extensive look at Passave) reached the following conclusions.
Tellabs - Broadlight
Optical Solutions (Now Calix) - In House
Alcatel - Freescale
Motorola (Quantum Bridge) - BPON in house, hiring an ASIC […]

Did PMC-Sierra Overpay?

There is some discussion that PMC-Sierra (PMCS) may have overpaid KKR for the storage semiconductor portion of the Agilent business.

We think PMC-Sierra did indeed overpay. Here’s a generous financial picture of the storage division.
